Community Paediatrics

In Community Paediatrics we hold clinics for pre-school and school aged children up to the age of 16 at Centenary House, Darnall Children’s Centre and the Northern General Hospital.

We see children with a variety of problems including:

• developmental problems in pre-school children
• behaviour problems in pre-school children where an underlying developmental problem is suspected
• learning difficulties
• clumsiness
• continence
• common childhood problems

Our work

We do detailed assessments and arrange further investigations if needed.

We work closely when required with other hospital departments and other agencies such as schools, nurseries, health visitors, school nurses, family intervention service, speech therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to ensure our patients get the best possible care.

We also prepare medical advice for the Local Education Authority for Educational Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

Referrals

The Community Paediatric clinics accept referrals from:

• health visitors
• GPs
• school nurses
• speech therapists
• consultants
• the Audiology Service
• the Inclusion team and educational psychologists
• Looked After and Adoptive Children’s Health team
• CAMHS

Health visitors and school nurses are encouraged to discuss cases with the child’s GP before referring them to Community Paediatrics.

School or nursery staff should channel referrals through the Inclusion team or the child’s GP, health visitor or school nurse with relevant supporting information.
