Neonatal Neurology

baby

Our Neonatal Neurology Service has close links with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the Jessop Wing in Sheffield.

Neonatal Neurology is led by Dr Anthony Hart, who works closely with neonatologists, neuroradiologists, neurophysiologists and the multidisciplinary team to provide care for newborn babies with neurological conditions.

Referrals are often made to the service for epileptic seizures, babies who are floppy or stiff, and other conditions likely to lead to learning problems or long-term neurological problems such as cerebral palsy.

Transition and follow-up

The Neonatal Neurology Service works in partnership with the neonatal follow-up neonatologist at the Jessop Wing and the neurodisability team at the Ryegate Children’s Centre to ensure that appropriate follow-up and community support is provided for babies once they are discharged from the Jessop Wing.

We also have links with the High Dependency Unit so that transition is as smooth as possible for families when their baby is moved from the Jessop Wing to the hospital.

Research

The Neonatal Neurology Service is actively involved in research.

Dr Hart’s PhD research programme was in Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the preterm infant.

The team are working closely with neuroradiologists and radiologists looking into the effectiveness of various brain imaging techniques to predict outcomes.

We are also working with other partners to develop research projects into the effects of endocrinology abnormalities on neurological and developmental status, and neurophysiology of the newborn infant.
