It was World Administrative Day on Wednesday 27 April, presenting a chance for people to celebrate their admin colleagues and the fantastic work they do each day.

As part of the day, admin colleagues across the region were celebrated during an exciting evening awards event at Sheffield City Hall.

As part of the celebrations, we spoke to our Rising Star award winner Sarah Young. Colleagues across South Yorkshire were invited to nominate their colleagues for a ‘Rising Star’ award – for those who have gone above and beyond in the last two years, supporting and caring for others.

Congratulations on your amazing win Sarah! Can you tell us a bit about your role and what you do?

“Thank you! I am the Ward Clerk Team Leader based on Ward 6 where I undertake the ward clerk role – including general reception duties, bed states data, data collection and input. It’s difficult to say what I do, it differs so much from day to day. It depends on what is happening on the ward, phone calls, patients’ needs etc.

“Then around the hospital, it could be a staff support issue or transport that requires arranging for anywhere in the country, which can take hours, or undertaking tasks for colleagues and looking at ways to improve our service. Nothing is ever the same, every day is different, and you have to be able to react to what comes your way or rocks up on your desk.”

Have you heard of World Admin Day before or was this a complete surprise?

“I knew there was an admin day, but the Trust hasn’t celebrated it before, so I was glad to hear we were celebrating it this year. However, I didn’t expect to be nominated and was gobsmacked that I was, but then to find out I had won the award was quite a surprise.”

How did you feel to attend the event and receive the award?

“It was a lovely evening and quite enjoyable. I was a bit nervous to pick the award up. It was good to see so many people there and bumped into a few old colleagues.”

Do you have anything further to say to your colleagues and the person/people who nominated you?

“I would like to give a big thank you to my colleague Nikki, who nominated me and hope she enjoyed the evening too. The things that were said were really nice and appreciated.

“I love my job and just want to say there are some fabulous teams across the Trust and we all should celebrate more, it’s been a tough couple of years and we deserve to celebrate each other’s successes.”

Congratulations to all colleagues who were nominated for the Rising Star Award and thank you to all of our admin and clerical colleagues at Sheffield Children’s for your amazing work each day.
