28 April 2026

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) wards at Sheffield Children’s Becton Centre, as ‘Good’ following an inspection on 16 and 17 December.

Our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) inpatient wards treat children and young people with a range of difficulties that are seriously impacting on their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Becton Centre for Children and Young People is a state-of-the-art centre for children and young adults aged up to 18 with serious and complex mental health issues.

The latest report confirms that significant improvements have been made. All five key areas – safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led – are now rated ‘Good’, with leadership improving from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’. The Trust’s overall rating remains ‘Good’.

This progress reflects Sheffield Children’s ongoing commitment to its Quality Promise: providing care that is safe, kind and outstanding for every child, young person and family.

Inspection highlights

CQC inspectors found that:

  • Staff understood how to protect young people from abuse and worked effectively with partner organisations to keep them safe
  • Wards were safe, clean, well-equipped and designed to meet the needs of patients
  • Staff supported healthier lifestyles, tailoring advice to each young person
  • Care was delivered with compassion and kindness, with respect for privacy and dignity
  • Leaders demonstrated the skills, experience and integrity needed to run services effectively, fostering a culture of openness
  • Young people were actively involved in planning their care to ensure it met their individual needs

Commitment to continuous improvement

The Trust recognises the importance of learning, listening and continually improving services. The improvements highlighted in this report demonstrate the dedication of staff to delivering high-quality care and creating a supportive, therapeutic environment for young people.

Sheffield Children’s will continue to build on this progress, guided by its Quality Promise, to ensure every patient receives care that is consistently safe, kind and as outstanding as possible.

The full report will be published on the CQC website.
