Nurse who has “saved the lives of hundreds of children over her 29-year career” wins DAISY Award

 

The DAISY Award is your opportunity to say thank you to a nurse at Sheffield Children’s for delivering outstanding care. Tanya was nominated for the award by a colleague who said she is “an inspiration, with her can-do attitude, unfaltering dedication to her job and relentless hard work.”

 

Tanya joined the Sheffield Children’s team as a nurse on our Paediatric Critical Care Unit in 1996 and has been in her current role since 2003.

 

In her nomination, Tanya’s colleague said: “Tanya has saved the lives of hundreds of children over her 29-year career, by directly working as a Critical Care Nurse and then in her current role of Resuscitation Officer, where she has trained countless Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, parents, and carers in how to deal with deteriorating and critically injured children in respiratory/cardiac arrest.”

 

Tanya runs national, local, mandated, and bespoke critical care training and has planned and facilitated an array of ground-breaking courses using different teaching modes.

 

Her colleague added: “Tanya has unwavering support for colleagues who have encountered traumatic emergencies and is the most amazing manager, making her team feel so supported and valued at all times. She always goes the extra mile. If anyone deserves this award it’s Tanya.”

 

Tanya was presented with her DAISY Award by Professor Sally Shearer OBE, Sheffield Children’s Director of Nursing and Quality before she retired in August, and Deputy Directors of Nursing, Claire Harness and Jenny Longden. As part of the award, she received a stone hand-carved sculpture called ‘The Healer’s Touch’ from Zimbabwe.

 

Tanya said: “I was very surprised and amazed to receive the award as everyone kept it top secret! It was lovely to receive as it is a special award for a recognition of care and compassion, but I also find it very humbling as this is an international nursing award and, like most recipients, I feel that I am just doing my job! I would like to say a huge thank you to my colleagues for the nomination and the award.”
