New life-saving lungs and a healthier future for Florence!

We are overjoyed to hear the news that Sheffield Children’s patient Florence is recovering well from her lung transplant and looking forward to the future her and her family have dreamt about.

Florence first came to Sheffield Children’s for care in 2022 after she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

Whilst Florence has been cancer free since October 2022, complications from her stem cell transplant meant she needed a double lung transplant, and it’s been a long journey to reach this point.

It’s thanks to the outstanding care at Sheffield Children’s, the remarkable generosity of organ donation, and the transplant team at Great Ormond Street Hospital that Florrie and her family can now start thinking about the future.

Florence’s mum Stacey said: “Sheffield Children’s will always feel like another home to us, the staff and the place mean so much to our whole family. Without all the wonderful staff from Ward 6, Florence wouldn’t be here.”

Throughout it all, Florence’s spirit has shone brightly, and she has wanted to help others every step of the way. Together with her family she has built a global online platform supporting other children like her, founded a charity, and was named the Pride of Britain Child of Courage 2025.

The gift of life

Florence’s life has now been saved by two separate donors – stem cell donation and organ donation, and it’s thanks to the remarkable generosity of individuals and families that Florrie can now start thinking about the future.

Dr Katharine Patrick, consultant at Sheffield Children’s, said: “Being on the stem cell register is one of the very few opportunities we have in life to save another person, and sharing your wishes around organ donation can give people like Florence a second chance.”

To find out more about registering as a donor visit: www.organdonation.nhs.uk/register-your-decision/ and www.blood.co.uk/stem-cell-donor-registry/joining-the-register/.

Thank you to everyone involved in Florence’s care. We are so proud of our 150 year history helping create healthier futures for children and young people – just like Florrie.
