“Sally is a truly exceptional nurse, one of a kind.”
Sally Carney, Endocrine Clinical Nurse Specialist, is our latest DAISY award winner. She was nominated by a colleague for being “a fabulous communicator, very caring and families all love her.”
Sally established a paediatric endocrine nurse specialist (ESN) service at Sheffield Children’s and shows an immense dedication for the service by currently leading the nursing team, despite being retired!
The colleague added: “She was appointed as an ESN in the late 1990s and, due to the respect and confidence she already commanded, was given free rein to develop endocrine diagnostic testing protocols. She has overseen the evolution and expansion of the ESN service to now include four (soon to be five) nurse specialists. Sally was an early trail blazer managing patients in clinic, where she saw many of our thyroid and growth hormone patients.
“Locally she has run several patient support groups, in particular the Turner Syndrome support group, in the evenings, in her own time. However these achievements don’t really capture what is wonderful about Sally. She has been excellent in a way that is difficult to describe and quantify… She’s been an invaluable member of the team and we feel this award is befitting of such a self-effacing but special colleague.”
Sally said: “I would like to thank my Endocrine colleagues especially Dr Charlotte Elder who nominated me for this prestigious award, without my teams support and dedication to our patients and their families my role would not be possible.
“It was a fantastic surprise to be secretly presented the beautiful African carved statue and my testimonial, which I will treasure. It is a real honour to be nominated for the Daisy Award especially over the testing period we have all been working in, over the last year because of COVID -19. Once again I am grateful to work with such a conscientious team of people in a paediatric setting that promotes excellence and evidence based care for children and young adults.”
The DAISY Award is your opportunity to say thank you to a nurse at Sheffield Children’s for delivering outstanding care to you or your loved ones.
As part of the award, Sally received a stone hand-carved sculpture called ‘The Healer’s Touch’ from Zimbabwe.
Would you like to nominate someone to be the next winner? The DAISY award is an ongoing award process, so if you have a nurse in mind that you would like to win the next award, please take five minutes to nominate them on the DAISY award webpage.
Thank you to everyone who has already made a nomination, and keep an eye out because we’ll be sharing the special International Nurses Day award winner and the runners up soon!
