Since Sheffield Children’s was founded in 1876 we’ve provided care through world wars, the creation of the NHS, and lots more!
Every step of the way we’ve been united in our purpose to create a healthier future for children and young people, and we couldn’t have done it without thousands of dedicated colleagues.
As part of our 150th celebrations Sheffield Children’s Chief Executive Ruth Brown and current student nurse Oke met with retired nurses Mary, Joyce, Jenny, Iris, Anne and Margaret. They reminisced about nursing life and shared wisdom with Oke as she begins her own nursing career.
With over 200 years of experience between them, this unique opportunity allowed Oke to learn more about the history of nursing and what it was like caring for children and young people 70 years ago.
Oke said: “I’m so happy and proud to have met this special generation of nurses and to have learnt more about the people that came before me.”
One of the fondest memories was shared by Mary, who watched England win the world cup in 1966 during her training at Sheffield Children’s.
Mary said: “The happiest time has to be a Saturday afternoon at Thornbury Annexe when the ward sister allowed a patient’s father to bring in a small TV so that we could watch England win the World Cup in 1966.
“I sat and fed a baby for some of the match but couldn’t make it last until full time!”
Thank you to all our wonderful nurses – past and present, Sheffield Children’s wouldn’t be the place it is today without you.
