Building healthier futures: celebrating the teams behind Sheffield Children’s research

19 June 2026

Research has been at the heart of Sheffield Children’s for 150 years.

From pioneering discoveries that have transformed care for children with rare conditions to studies improving treatment for everyday illnesses, research continues to drive innovation across the Trust.

This Red4Research Day, Sheffield Children’s is celebrating the staff whose contribution to research is helping build on a legacy of discovery and shape the next generation of children’s healthcare.

Research is a team effort that brings together professionals from across the NHS, academia and industry.

Alongside consultants and doctors, research depends on the expertise of nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, allied health professionals, research assistants, data specialists and many others.

Every role plays a vital part in helping studies run safely and effectively, giving patients opportunities to access new treatments and helping improve care for future generations.

Today, Sheffield Children’s continues to build on that legacy through a huge range of research studies.

Among the trials currently recruiting are:

  • an asthma study investigating the use of a combined reliever and preventer inhaler to improve asthma control in children.
  • D-CYPHR, which is exploring how genomic research can help improve diagnosis and treatment for children with rare and inherited conditions.
  • and NESST, a study testing a needle-free test to measure the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Gillian Gatenby, Associate Director for Research and Innovation at Sheffield Children’s, said: “Research is fundamental to everything we do at Sheffield Children’s. It enables us to continually improve care, develop new treatments and create healthier futures for children and young people.

“As we celebrate 150 years of Sheffield Children’s, Red4Research is an opportunity to recognise the dedication of our staff whose contributions continue to drive innovation and discovery. Their commitment ensures that the next generation of children will benefit from advances that are only possible through research.”
