More than 400 families attended this year’s Teddy Bear’s Hospital, held on Saturday 25 April 2026 at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, in partnership with students from the University of Sheffield.
The much-loved annual event once again transformed the out-patient department into a vibrant, interactive learning space where children could explore healthcare in a fun and reassuring way.
Organised by medical students and supported by a diverse group of volunteers, including students from a range of disciplines, the free family day invited children to bring along their teddies and toys for diagnosis and treatment. Through hands-on activity stations, play-based learning helped young visitors better understand hospitals, doctors, and everyday healthcare experiences, reducing anxiety and building confidence.
Families engaged with a wide variety of themed rooms and activities, covering topics such as healthy eating, road safety, medical procedures, and home safety. Healthcare professionals were also on hand to share expertise and answer questions. A urology nurse highlighted the importance of hydration and bladder health, noting that the event created opportunities for “good conversations with families about what is normal and what isn’t”, including common concerns like bedwetting and constipation.
The School Age Immunisation Service team reported strong interest from families, with many keen to learn more about vaccines, including MMR and the flu vaccine, and their role in protecting children’s health. Meanwhile, the Research Team inspired curiosity among younger visitors by demonstrating how studies are conducted. Children took part in interactive activities such as completing mock consent forms for their teddies, with one young person expressing ambitions to become a researcher.
Parents praised the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. One mother shared that she returned after a previous visit with her eldest child, saying it was “lovely to see the students conversing with the children” and helping them learn about healthcare in an accessible way.
For volunteers, the event provided valuable experience in learning how to communicate with children. A first-year medical student explained they took part to build confidence working with young people, while others highlighted the enjoyment of seeing families learn together, particularly in sessions focused on home safety.
The Teddy Bear’s Hospital Team said “We welcomed over 400 families during the day and have really enjoyed the opportunity to provide a free event which benefits both families and medical students. The feedback has been really positive and we are really grateful to all the volunteers and teams from Sheffield Children’s who have helped make the event happen.”
