Sheffield Children’s welcomed The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Safiya Saeed to our Hospital.
The Lord Mayor met children, young people, families and staff on Ward 3, where she learned all about the different ways that the team at Sheffield Children’s are striving to minimise the impact of health inequalities. This includes our partnership with local social enterprise Food Works, who provide delicious frozen ready meals for families staying on wards across Sheffield Children’s Hospital on a pay-what-you-can basis. Our partnership with Food Works is just one example of how we’re leading the way in providing sustainable and affordable options for families who visit us.
After a quick detour with families as part of a creative breakdancing session provided by Art+, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity’s dedicated arts programme, Safiya then moved onto our Emergency Department. There, she met with an amazing team who deliver outstanding care for over 62,000 children and young people each year. Sheffield Children’s is the only major trauma centre across South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw North Lincolnshire, and Derbys
hire to receive children under the age of 16, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
After that whistlestop tour, the Lord Mayor got the chance to sit down with a group of our long-serving Sheffield Children’s colleagues. They spoke all about their experiences at Sheffield Children’s over the years, what they do to help provide healthier futures for children and young people, and how we’re continuing to lead the way with innovative care services.
This year Sheffield Children’s marks 150th birthday, and moments like this reflect who we are. From our beginnings in Sheffield, our whole-child approach – working hand-in-hand with partners has always been at the heart of what we do – rooted in kindness, collaboration and ambition.
A huge thank you to Safiya for visiting us – come back any time!
