Sheffield Children’s celebrates Star Awards 2024 winners

A large awards event with people sat at tables decorated with lights and balloons
23 September 2024

On Friday 20 September, Sheffield Children’s highlighted the incredible contribution that different members of our Trust make towards providing a healthier future for children and young people.

Sheffield Children’s Star Awards is an annual event that recognises individuals and teams for their expertise, innovation, attitude, and care they show throughout the year.

We were also delighted to welcome The Children’s Hospital Charity patron Jon Richardson to host the night.

A range of awards were presented, which each represent one of Sheffield Children’s core values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. The awards also recognise the inspiring research and innovation that’s carried out by dedicated teams at Sheffield Children’s.

“An absolute hero from day one”

The awards concluded with the Children’s Star Award, which is nominated for by children, young people, and their families.

This year we were very thankful to two amazing families who recorded special messages to help us present the awards.

Leanne Smith, Clinical Psychologist in the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) team, was nominated by twins Elijah and Orlaith’s parents Chris and Kayla who said that Leanne: “has been an absolute hero from day one.

“She has been an absolute rock and pivotal part of our family’s ongoing recovery from the trauma of 2 babies being born with CF and needing multiple operations. She brought such calm and warmth to a very chaotic and often scary time for us.

“I feel I will never be able to fully put into words how truly grateful we are for Leanne. She has done more than she will ever know and deserves recognition for just being absolutely amazing!”

In the Team category, the Children with Medical Complexity (CMC) Team were also awarded the Children’s Star after being nominated by Charlotte, Jed and their baby daughter, Leona.

In their nomination, they said: “The support the CMC Team offered was phenomenal. They’ve been a part of our daughter’s journey even before her admission to Sheffield Children’s. They were in contact before her transfer from the Neonatal Surgical Unit to the Paediatric Critical Care Unit and met with us to give a tour of different wards.

“In a big hospital where you meet lots of different doctors, nurses and staff, having the CMC team be a part of Leona’s care has really helped in tying all her needs together. They also provided exceptional reassurance to us as parents when things have been tough. They’d always have a smile on their faces and a supportive ear. We owe them so much and want to say thank you.”
