After accidentally spilling hot wax on her hand and suffering a third-degree burn, 13-year-old Sophie was cared for on Sheffield Children’s Burns Unit.
At first there were daily visits for dressing changes and operations, and then three more years of regular check-ups. During this time Sophie built a strong bond with our team.
Sophie said: “I was looked after by such a dedicated team of nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists. Each of them played such an important role in helping me through my recovery, and their kindness and support made what was a really difficult experience so much more positive and reassuring.”
Sheffield Children’s Burns Unit is a specialist centre, and children from as far north as Whitby, across to Hull and south to Chesterfield can be referred to our care.
Now 26, Sophie has been inspired by her experience to pursue her own nursing career.
“The care I received at Sheffield Children’s left a truly lasting impression on me – it was filled with compassion, expertise, and encouragement that shaped not only my recovery but also who I am today.”
A big step in Sophie’s recovery was when our Burns Unit arranged for her to go to a national burns camp for young people who have suffered burn injuries.
“All of the staff at Sheffield Children’s made my experience a really positive one, but the burns camp was one of my favourite memories. I was able to meet other burns patients from across the country, share our stories, and feel understood in a way that was really special.
“The biggest challenge for me was how self-conscious I felt about my scar when I was younger – I often tried to hide it because I didn’t like the way it looked. Looking back now, I would tell myself that everything was going to be okay, and that my scar isn’t something to be ashamed of, but rather a part of me and a reminder of how far I’ve come.
“That shift in how I see myself was one of the biggest changes from my time at Sheffield Children’s, and it’s something I’d want anyone going through a similar journey to know: you’re not alone, and with time, strength, and support, you’ll learn to embrace your story.”
During this journey of self-discovery, Sophie also took the early practical steps in her own nursing career. Today she’s making her previous carers proud by looking after children and young people as a Paediatric Nurse.
Looking to a healthier future
When she’s not on the wards, there’s any number of places that you might find Sophie.
“I love playing netball, going hiking, walking my dog, and most of all, being a mummy to my daughter. These hobbies give me a balance between staying active, enjoying the outdoors, and spending meaningful time with family.”
Even long after leaving Sheffield Children’s care, Sophie’s time spent with the Burns Unit has left a lasting impression.
She said: “For me, a healthier future for burns patients is having the confidence and support to feel comfortable in their own skin. Sheffield Children’s played a huge role in giving me that future – not just by helping me physically heal, but by providing emotional support and opportunities like the burns camp, which showed me I wasn’t alone.
“If I had to describe the care in a word, it would be ‘life-changing’.
“I’m incredibly proud of becoming both a nurse and a mum, as these are the achievements that mean the most to me and continue to inspire everything I do. My ambition for the future is to keep growing in my career as a paediatric nurse while giving my daughter the happiest and healthiest start in life.”
As we celebrate Sheffield Children’s 150th anniversary this year, Sophie story is a powerful reminder of how the care we provide can inspire the next generation of clinicians.
