It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
At Sheffield Children’s we were lucky enough to welcome lots of exciting visitors to our Trust to enjoy the festivities with us.
Olympic gold medallist and Children’s Hospital Charity patron Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill got us off to an incredible start as she caught up with families about their stay, danced with Winnie and chatted about medals with Harriet.
Later that day we celebrated a red and white Christmas visit as some of Sheffield United’s stars spread festive cheer by playing games with patients, talking all things football, and giving out a range of fabulous festive gifts.
Father Christmas himself – virtually – visited children staying at Sheffield Children’s thanks to Cisco’s ‘Connected Santa’ programme, a festive feat that connected our patients all the way to the North Pole through Webex technology – and a dash of magic of course!
We kept the ball rolling when England Lioness, Manchester City player and charity patron Esme Morgan got stuck into all sorts of activities as she painted and danced with lots of children, families and staff.
The England internationals kept coming as Manchester United’s Harry Maguire visited to hand out signed gifts, talk all things football, and meet his biggest fan – Alana.
Next it was time to chill out with the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team at the Becton Centre. Colton, Daniel, Matthew, Kevin and Marco came kitted out in excellent festive outfits and were then grilled in a Q&A from young people staying at Becton. In case you’re wondering:
Q. Would you prefer to eat cottage cheese forever or Peperami forever? A. Peperami
Q. Is it cold when playing ice hockey? A. To start with yes, but not once you’re moving!
Q. Would you like a remote control with a rewind button for life, or a pause button? This one caused a lot of discussion. A. Rewind – so the team can relive their summer holidays.
Then it was time for the blue half of the city to join in the festive fun as Sheffield Wednesday players visited the hospital and Becton Centre. The team – including captain Barry Bannan and new manager Danny Röhl – met lots of happy fans who received signed goodies.
And last but not least, the stars of the Lyceum Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast pantomime stepped off the stage and onto our wards to pose for photos and chat to patients staying at Sheffield Children’s in the run-up to Christmas.
Thank you to everyone who came along – we hope to see you all again soon!
