Have you seen the incredible news?! Everyone at Sheffield Children’s would like to say a huge congratulations to Florence who has been awarded the Child of Courage award at the Pride of Britain awards.
Florence was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in May 2022 and despite everything that Florence has been through in the last few years, she continues to amaze everyone she meets. Florence has been a brilliant friend to so many patients on Ward 6 here in Sheffield, her funny and educational videos about living with cancer have reached millions of people on social media, and together with her family (mum Stacey, dad Andrew and big brother Freddie) she has set up a charity called Be More Fab to help raise awareness.
Florence first came to Sheffield Children’s in August 2022 for a stem cell transplant to help save her life and just before Christmas 2022 Florence and her family were finally able to go home for the first time after the transplant. Unfortunately Florence’s recovery has not been as straightforward as hoped.
Since her transplant Florence has been living with Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) which is a complication that can occur after a stem cell transplant where the donor stem cells attack healthy cells in the patient. This has meant that Florence has experienced many complications and is currently awaiting a lung transplant.
Florence’s mum Stacey said: “We are so incredibly proud of Florence and we hope that Florence winning the award shows other children that anything is possible. We will continue to shout the praises of everyone at Sheffield Children’s – without Ward 6 and all of the other teams we wouldn’t have our beautiful girl.”
We are so pleased to see Florence recognised in this very special way alongside her family and host of new celebrity friends, and we can’t wait to hear more about the big night!
