Amy meets Ally! Celebrating 78 Years of the NHS

05 July 2026

Today is the 78th Birthday of the NHS!

150 years ago, Sheffield Children’s started small – a group of staff including three founders, auditors, a dispenser, a ladies committee, a handful of doctors and nurses. Now it is proud to have nearly 4,000 wonderful people working across the region – all working together to create healthier futures for children and young people.

In 1876, our founders set out some aims, including: “to afford opportunities for training women in special duties of children’s nurses,” helping shape early paediatric nursing education. This kickstarted a journey that has grown into a workforce of more than 1,200 nurses and health visitors caring for children and young people across hospital wards, community services and mental health teams. Hear what newly-qualified nurse Amy and retired nurse Ally had to say about what nursing at Sheffield Children’s means to them.

Thank you, Amy, Ally, and every member of staff across the NHS – past and present – for your hard work and dedication.

Without you, nothing we do would be possible 💙
