Hand Therapy

Introduction

The Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery Team includes hand surgeons, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

The Hand Therapy team consists of Andrea Strogen and Kerry Nettleship. Andrea is the lead occupational therapist for Paediatric Hand Therapy with over 25 years’ experience. Therapists are based within the Pink area of Outpatients at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The service is currently offered four days a week.

What is Hand Therapy?

  • Therapy to patients having upper limb surgery with our PLRS (Paediatric Limb Reconstruction Service)
  • Reduction of oedema (swelling) following injury or surgery.
  • Exercise programme to complete at home to increase range of movement, function and strength.
  • Scar management
  • De-sensitisation techniques.
  • Thermoplastic splints
  • Function or activity related targeted rehabilitation
  • Handwriting assessments

Referrals

Patients can be referred to Hand Therapy in a variety of ways. A referral can be made through their General Practitioner or from doctors within Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

The referrals received are processed and prioritised by therapists and an appointment will be provided at the next possible opportunity. It is an extremely busy service and at times there may be a waiting list in operation.
