Professor Nils Krone was appointed at the University of Sheffield in 2015 and works as Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He trained in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Endocrinology at the University Children’s Hospital, Munich and University of Kiel Children’s Hospital, Germany. From 2006-2015, he worked at the University of Birmingham as Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist and Senior Clinical Lecturer and as Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (2006-2015).
At Sheffield Children’s Hospital, he provides a general endocrinology service including conditions of growth and puberty, and conditions of hormone excess and deficiency. He has a special interest in adrenal conditions, differences in sex development (DSD) and endocrine genetics. Professor Krone leads the adrenal and co-leads the DSD clinical services. Together with colleagues from endocrinology, he delivers the young adult service at Sheffield Teaching Hospital.
Professor Krone has a broad research portfolio ranging from fundamental research to clinical quality improvement research. The ongoing translational research of his group explores the systemic consequences and health implications of disrupted steroid hormone synthesis and action. A key focus of his clinical and academic work is quality improvement and standardisation of care delivery. His group leads on a number of clinical projects to establish the evidence base on the current health status in individuals with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) across the life span analysing real-world data in collaboration with the international CAH registry and the Society for Endocrinology. Together with clinical and academic colleagues, he is exploring a wide range of research questions relevant to people living with obesity and the impact of ultra processed food. He has supervised numerous PhD, MD, MSc and undergraduate students as well as clinical and research fellows from all over the world.
Professor Krone has held numerous national and international leadership roles. Currently, he is heading the Section of Clinical Sciences, School of Medicine and Population Health and the University of Sheffield. He is one of the Co-Directors of the Wellcome Trust Forward North PhD Academy and Academic Lead for Paediatric Training at the University of Sheffield. He acts as representative of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes (BSPED) on the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) research consultation committee. He is a member (paediatric representative) of the Clinical Committee, Society for Endocrinology, member of Care Quality Improvement Committee (SDM registries), advisor to the 100,000 genomes newborn screening programme, and he chairs of the Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Study Executice (CaHASE2 study), Society of Endocrinology. He is medical advisor to the CAH support group (livingwithCAH).
