Dr Shishu Sharma is a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Sharma is the Lead for Paediatric GI Physiology services.
He is nationally and internationally recognised for his expertise in advanced paediatric endoscopy, gastrointestinal physiology, and the management of complex gastrointestinal disorders in children.
Dr Sharma serves as the Endoscopy Chair of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) and also holds a leadership role within the Commonwealth Association of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, reflecting his standing as a key opinion leader in paediatric endoscopy across the UK and internationally. In these roles, he contributes to shaping national standards, training frameworks, and quality improvement initiatives in paediatric endoscopic practice.
His practice includes expertise in gastrointestinal motility and physiology, supporting the comprehensive evaluation of functional and motility disorders. He has a particular interest in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs), including eosinophilic oesophagitis, delivering multidisciplinary, evidence-based care for children with chronic and refractory disease.
Dr Sharma has a strong research profile, with specific focus on novel endoscopic therapies and techniques. His work includes research and clinical application of Stretta radiofrequency therapy in paediatric gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, as well as the use of over-the-scope clips (OTSC) for the management of complex gastrointestinal defects, bleeding, and fistulae in children. His research interests align with advancing minimally invasive therapies and improving outcomes for children requiring advanced endoscopic intervention.
In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr Sharma is actively involved in education, training, and mentorship, contributing to national and international teaching programmes and promoting excellence and safety in paediatric endoscopy practice.
