Dr Alaa Baioumi is a Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. She started working with the team in Sheffield in 2024 following completion of her Paediatric and subspecialty GRID training in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, working across several regions, including Kent, Cardiff, and Bristol.
Dr Baioumi sees children and young people with conditions affecting growth, puberty, and hormone excess or deficiency. She has a particular interest in diagnosing and managing girls with disorders of androgen excess and is part of the Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology (PAG) Team.
She is passionate about Medical Education and led regional initiatives to support training during periods when face-to-face learning was limited. She received the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Deanery ‘Unsung Hero’ award in 2021 as a member of the regional trainee representatives committee.
Dr Baioumi is also dedicated to educating families, children, and young people. She led projects to produce information videos for families of children with diabetes who use insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems, aiming to support the uptake and effective use of these technologies. She has also led a micro-teaching programme to help families optimise diabetes management while observing their religious practices. She is dedicated to implementing strategies aiming at mitigating the risk factors of developing type 2 diabetes in at-risk children and young people.
Dr Baioumi was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Paediatrics by Ain Shams University, where she completed her medical degree with honours, as well as her Master’s and Doctorate in Paediatrics. Her Master’s research investigated the diagnostic and prognostic value of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in paediatric meningoencephalitis, while her Doctoral research examined several vitamin D receptor polymorphisms in children with nutritional rickets.
She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction in Endocrinology and Diabetes from Queen Mary University of London.
Dr Baioumi’s research interests include paediatric endocrinology, diabetes, obesity, bone health, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and hormone replacement therapy in adolescents with disorders of puberty. Her publications can be accessed on Google Scholar.
