Profile

Caroline MacDonald is a Consultant in Paediatric Surgery with Specialism in Paediatric Urology. She leads for research in her directorate at the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and is active member of the Human Factors Training and Development group in Trust.  She went to University in Leeds, and trained throughout Yorkshire in her early years, spending some time in New Zealand, moving to Scotland for senior surgical training and finishing her training with a European fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

She has a MSc in Genetics from UCL and an MD from The University of Glasgow in Qualitative Research, which has made her a national expert in Torsion for young people. She has experience of paediatric care, emergency care, trauma surgery and complex reconstructive surgery.  She now predominately treats fetuses, neonates, infants, children and young adults with urological diseases.

Alongside her research work, she focuses on understanding how the basic nature of being human can make working as a doctor or allied health care professional in the current system difficult.  This is the focus of her presentation to us.  How overload affects us all, the risks of it, and recognising the signs of burnout.
