Our Speech and Language Therapy team provides services for children, adolescents and adults in the Sheffield area who stammer.

Stammering services for children and adolescents

The service works with children and adolescents under the age of 16. There is also an adult service for people over 16.

Where the primary reason for referral is concern around stammering, children, adolescents and their families are offered clinic appointments.

First appointments for assessment are 30-45 minutes and help us decide what difficulties the child may have and the sort of strategies most likely to help with speech and communication.

Individual therapy appointments to work with parents/carers and their child usually take place weekly for an agreed number of weeks and are clinic based.

We have close links with schools and work with them to provide information about how they can support children with stammers in school.

We also offer intensive courses for older children aged 9 to 12 and 11 to 16, if appropriate.

For further in formation contact Claire Bull or Isabel O’Leary.

Stammering services for adults

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust also supports a service for adults (aged 16 and over) who stammer, also known as dysfluency. The clinic is based at Flockton House.

First appointments for assessment are for approximately an hour. The therapist will want to discuss how your stammer impacts upon your life as well as understand what you want from therapy.

Therapy sessions are usually individual, but once a year we aim to run an intensive course for interested adults, if appropriate.

You are able to make an appointment to see a Speech and Language Therapist yourself by completing and returning the referral form.
