Travel expenses

Did you know that you may be able to claim back travel expenses on journeys to and from the hospital when escorting your child?

If you receive any of the following benefits then you should be entitled to make a claim:

  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credit
  • HC2/HC5 Claim Form
  • Income-based Pension Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit

How to make a claim

Follow these steps to make sure that we can process your claim:

1. Travel claim form

Collect a travel claim form from the ward or department every time you visit.

2. Proof of benefit

We need to see proof of your benefits each time you make a claim.

  • For Income Support, JSA, ESA and Pension Credit this must be dated within the last three months.
  • An NHS exemption card or letter stating that your earnings are less than £15,276 will be taken as proof of Working Tax Credit
  • For Universal Credit, proof must be shown of the take home pay on the current months assessment.

Due to the Data Protection Act we are unable to find out this information over the telephone so we need you to provide us with this proof yourself.

3. Public transport tickets

Save your bus/tram/train tickets as we can’t process your claim without them.

If you take a taxi, mileage is paid at 16p per mile on production of taxi receipts. Distance is calculated using AA Route Planner.

4. Driving

If you travel by car, the distance is calculated using AA Route Planner and mileage is paid at 16p per mile.

Parking expenses will be reimbursed for the day your child arrives, and for the day they leave the hospital only. You will need to have a valid parking ticket/receipt. You can claim this back on your next visit providing that the ticket is dated within the previous three months.
