Food for patients

When your child is staying on a ward, their food will be provided by the hospital. A member of staff will visit you on the ward to give you a menu of food to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner, depending on how long you’re staying with us. If you have any dietary requirements, please chat to the member of staff about these and we can adapt to any needs you may have, or you can ask for a member of the Catering team to come and see you.

There are meal times throughout the day, but if you are hungry and have missed a meal time don’t hesitate to chat to a member of staff about what food is available from the all-day menu and they can help make sure you get something to eat.

If you’re visiting the Emergency Department, there are a number of vending machines nearby serving drinks, snacks and cold food.

Food for parents and carers staying at the hospital

We now offer breakfast to all parents and carers staying with children. Depending on the ward this maybe self-service from parent kitchens, offered directly or we may give you a voucher for the restaurant.

We also have freezers with sustainably sourced meals provided by Food Works. There are four meal types to meet all dietary needs. These are: meat, vegetarian, gluten free and vegan or low allergen. The meals can be taken, heated and enjoyed by parents and carers using the facilities in ward kitchens. They are available on a pay-what-you-can basis and payment is made using a simple tap and pay device in the kitchens. Payment options include £1, £2 and £3. Find out more about our Food Works offer

You can also use the parent kitchens to re-heat your own food if you prefer. Fridges are available as well, however we ask that you do not use the freezers, as this is where Food Works meals are stored and we need to keep enough storage space to provide meals for everyone. Please check your ward information to find out more.

If you have been in hospital for four days or more, we can offer you a voucher for 20% off the hot food counter in the canteen. Please ask a nurse if you have not been offered a voucher.

Food for everyone

The Parkside Restaurant is near the Blue lifts on B Floor of Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

It is open from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and Bank holidays.

Breakfast is served until 11.30am. After that time the menu offers a wide range of affordable hot and cold sit-down or takeaway meals, snacks and drinks to visitors and our staff. There is also a great value children’s menu.

We recently introduced a budget-friendly £1.50 Meal of the Day – a different tasty main course every day including weekends.

Vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free options are available and allergy information is displayed. If you are unsure please ask a member of the restaurant staff.

A Costa Coffee and WH Smith’s can be found in the hospital main entrance. There are other takeaways and coffee shops in the nearby area including a Co-Operative Food supermarket on Glossop Road, connected to the Q- park car park.
