Reducing the financial cost – Families Matter

The financial cost of hospital stays can be significant due to both lost income and the additional costs of staying in hospital such as food, travel, parking and much more. We might not be able to help with everything, but there are some small things we now do we hope will make a difference for you.

Our Families Matter offer

On admission to a ward you will be given a postcard with a QR code to this page and an easy way to request items you may not have such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and sanitary products. All our parent bathroom/shower rooms now have combined shampoo and shower gel, so simply ask for a towel so you can freshen up!

Reducing the cost of food

  • A Meal of the Day is available from our Parkside Restaurant between 12-6pm every day at a cost of only £1.50. You can find the restaurant on the second floor of the Western Bank acute site, near the Blue lifts on B Floor.
  • If you have stayed with us for more than 4 days you are able to claim 20% off hot meals in the Parkside Restaurant. Ask a member of the nursing team to complete a voucher for you and simply show this to the restaurant staff each time you visit.
  • We are working towards delivering our food pledge that no family should go hungry while they stay with us. The first step is to provide a free breakfast for all parents staying. A few of our wards are testing this out and we plan to make this provision for all wards by the middle of the Autumn of 2022.
  • For more information about food visit the Patient HQ webpage

Car Parking

Car parking is limited in and around the hospital. There is also the Q-PARK opposite and some on-road parking. There are limited spaces in our underground car park with some reserved for blue badge holders. For further information on parking, including eligibility for the underground car park, please visit the Parking page.

Take a look at our family wellbeing leaflet focused on ensuring you are maximising your income. Staff can print this out for you if you would find that helpful.

Any family struggling and in need of immediate financial support, whose admission is unplanned, have been in hospital for more than 5 days and are expected to be in for at least a further 2 weeks could be eligible to request money from the Family Fund. If you think you may benefit from this there are a number of colleagues in the nursing team able to help on different wards or contact our Patient Advocacy and Liaison (PALs) Manager in the first instance.

Treetops and Magnolia House are potential options for some families who would benefit from a bed and cooking facilities away from their child’s bedside. There are some criteria and availability is limited, but if you think this would help please do ask the nursing team.
