Welcome to Sheffield Children’s! If you’re reading this, you might be staying on one of our wards or waiting in our Emergency Department or on the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU).
While you are staying with us at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, we want to make sure that your stay is as comfortable as possible and you have what you need. Below, we have provided some key information and links about your stay.
We know the financial cost of hospital stays can be significant due to both lost income and the additional costs of staying in hospital such as food, travel, parking and much more. We might not be able to help with everything, but our Families Matter offer helps with some small things that we hope will make a difference for you.
On admission to a ward you will be given a postcard with a QR code to the Families Matter page which has information about how to request items you may not have such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and sanitary products. All our parent bathroom/shower rooms now have combined shampoo and shower gel, so simply ask for a towel so you can freshen up!
We can also provide a free breakfast for all parents who are staying with us.
While you’re here you might notice staff using smartphones or tablets as part of your care. This is so staff can use new digital systems which help access patient information quickly and securely, improving communication between colleagues. So, don’t worry if you see a member of staff on their phone or a tablet, at the bedside or on a ward corridor, they will be working – accessing the most recent patient information, recording vital signs observations such as blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, or contacting colleagues securely – not scrolling on social media!
As part of our admissions process patients aged 12 and above will now be asked if they smoke, or vape. This is part of our QUIT programme. Any patient who says they do smoke will be referred to our specialist Tobacco Treatment Advisors and offered access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), such as patches, gum and lozenges, and other support as part of their routine hospital care.
In the sections below we’ve highlighted information you might find useful while you’re at the hospital. If you need anything else, don’t hesitate to ask a member of staff.
Thank you, Sheffield Children’s.
