We’ve created a new test to measure the stress chemicals in your body!
There are some pretty cool things happening at our Clinical Research Facility at Sheffield Children’s and this is one of them!
Introducing “NeSST2” – some children, including a number on steroid medications are unable to produce a safe amount of the stress hormone, cortisol. This is called adrenal insufficiency which means they are less able to stay healthy in stressful situations such as when ill or having an operation. We want to understand the body’s ability to respond to stress and what the cut off for an abnormal response is.
The current test used to diagnose adrenal insufficiency requires children to visit the hospital for needles and blood tests but no more!
We’ve developed a new test which doesn’t involve needles or blood tests! Say hello to the new ‘sniff’ and ‘spit’ test, expect nasal sprays and saliva samples. Taking part will involve collecting four salivary samples at home and one visit to the Clinical Research Facility here at Sheffield Children’s which should take less than 2 hours.
We’re looking for 200, healthy, 0-16 year olds to get involved (we hope to be involving 17 and 18 year olds soon), could that be you?
