We are building the National Centre for Child Health Technology (NCCHT) at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. The NCCHT will be a world-class facility dedicated to creating a healthier future for children and young people through innovation, technology and outstanding care.
It will bring together world-leading universities, industry experts, healthcare professionals, and children and young people in ways never seen before to build new technologies that help solve the biggest challenges in children’s healthcare. This includes obesity, mental health, disease prevention, disabilities, maternal and child health, cancer, long-term conditions and transition.
The NCCHT will change how we care for children and young people – now and in the future. Most importantly, the Centre will be powered by the needs of our children and young people and their families – they are at the heart of all we do.
“They will be the leaders, parents and workforce of the future and the people who drive change. For them to have the best chance at doing that we must improve children’s health and healthcare now.
“We are excited about the ways the NCCHT is going to change young people’s experience of healthcare through developing the most advanced health technology in the world.” – Professor Paul Dimitri, Clinical Director of Technology and Innovation
Download ‘Inside the NCCHT’The NCCHT will have four floors with state-of-the-art facilities and all the spaces needed to design, create and test new child health technologies.
Throughout the building there will be five Centres with unique focuses including:
This will include a state-of-the-art gait and motion laboratory and Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment. These facilities will revolutionise the way Sheffield Children’s provides treatment for children and young people with orthopaedic, rheumatological, neurological and neuromuscular conditions, and cancer, and will provide collaboration and research opportunities.
Over 200 patients will receive care at the NCCHT every day. Sheffield Children’s teams – including Gait and Motion Analysis, and Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy – will provide regular appointments and embrace the innovation environment to explore how technology can improve services and care now and in the future.
Engineers, innovators, designers, and researchers will develop new technologies, manufacture prototypes and lead co-design engagement sessions with children and young people.
This will be a UK first in paediatric healthcare and will fill a crucial gap in the current research and development landscape. It will enable researchers and industry partners to collaborate and evaluate child health technologies in a range of real-world spaces dedicated to simulation testing, training opportunities, workshopping, calibration and more.
Organisations and teams will be able to rent space to develop opportunities such as an Advanced Telecommunications Hub that will have the capability for remote monitoring using the latest sensor technologies to provide the delivery of care where it is most needed.
“For 150 years Sheffield Children’s has been a pioneer in delivering specialised healthcare for children and young people. Sheffield has a national and international reputation in the field of children’s health, including over a decade of expertise in developing new child health technologies. These technologies have transformed the lives of the children and families we care for and shown the exciting potential for the future.” – Ruth Brown, Chief Executive of Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
Sheffield Children’s developed and hosts the National Technology Innovation Transforming Child Health (TITCH) Network and currently hosts the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Paediatrics and Child Health. This is one of 14 HRCs, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) working with patients, businesses, universities, and NHS Trusts to support the development of medical devices, diagnostics, and digital technologies. The NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health is the only HRC dedicated to children, young people, and their families, and works with five centres across the UK. Prior to April 2024, the NIHR HRC in Paediatrics and Child Health was known as the NIHR Children and Young People MedTech Co-operative (NIHR CYP MedTech) and was hosted by Sheffield Children’s.
From an initial investment of £50,000 when the TITCH Network was launched in 2014, these networks have leveraged over £23 million for child health technology development. These technologies have transformed the care of children and young people.
The Children’s Hospital Alliance (CHA) is a national network of specialist NHS trusts working together to improve the quality, access and experience of hospital care for children and families. We are one of 12 members within this network.
The NCCHT has received £22.5m funding from a combination of the UK Government, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, The Children’s Hospital Charity and Sheffield Children’s. Building will start in 2024, delivering in 2025.
