CAT course

Two day advanced course in managing major paediatric trauma

Date: 16 and 17 November 2026
Cost: £500 including lunch and evening meal

About the course

This course is aimed at clinicians who have a first line role in managing major paediatric trauma in a trauma centre.

It is delivered via written material, lectures and practical skills teaching including several hi-fidelity trauma simulations. These simulations use realistic numbers of clinicians from all the appropriate specialties in scenarios that run in real time for about 20-25 minutes followed by debrief and discussion.

Candidates on the course will learn from each other and from the range and depth of expertise available in the teaching faculty.

Programme

Day one (lunch provided)

Morning

  • Lectures on the essentials and tips about how to manage and lead in major/ polytrauma in children
  • Interactive sessions allowing candidates to discuss the priorities, dilemmas and latest developments in trauma resuscitation
  • Skills marketplace including emergency room thoracotomy

Afternoon

Immersive simulations and debriefs

Evening

Meal for candidates and trainers (Included in course fee)

Day two (lunch provided)

Morning: Lectures on specific trauma categories including head, spine, abdomen, chest and limb trauma, difficult situations and investigations in major trauma

Followed by: Immersive simulations and debriefs

Who the course is for

This course is aimed at middle grade doctors in paediatric emergency medicine, paediatric surgery and anaesthetics who have lead roles in trauma teams in paediatric major trauma centres, as well as intensive care nurses, emergency department nurses and operating department practitioners who work in paediatric trauma centres and will be involved in managing paediatric major trauma.

Possession of a current APLS or equivalent certificate is a minimum requirement. It is desirable for candidates to have ATLS in addition to this.

Places on the course are allocated by specialty, and in most cases will be given to the most senior trainees applying. All applicants will be placed on a waiting list and if we are not able to allocate you a place on this years course with your permission we will keep you on the waiting list for future courses.

Places will only be secured by candidates who can confirm that they have approved leave and have paid the course fee in full.
