About our Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU)

PCCU is a regional lead centre and we receive patients from across South Yorkshire and nationally. In 2015/16 we had 497 admissions in ICU and 417 in HDU.

Patients range from 0-18 years and can be with us from a few hours to several months depending on their needs.

Our team provides specialist care for infants, children and young people with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions including acute infections, trauma, neurological conditions, oncology and haematology.

PCCU is composed of three units:

  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Our Intensive Care Unit has ten beds and provides one to one nursing care for patients with life-threatening conditions.

  • High Dependency Unit (HDU)
HDU also has nine beds and cares for children who require a high degree of medical and nursing input. Here we have one nurse/nursing assistant for every two patients.

  • Neonatal Surgical Unit (NSU)
NSU has 12 cots where we care for babies who require care or a surgical procedure after birth. We have close links with the nearby Jessop Wing maternity unit and regional neonatal units.

We provide a range of therapies including basic and advanced ventilation, neurosurgical/neurological, high frequency oscillation, nitric oxide therapy and CVVH.

About the Trust

Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of just four specialist paediatric NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK and many of our services are among the best in the country.

We are currently undergoing a £40m redevelopment project which will bring the hospital up to modern standards. It will also become home to three of the current wards which will have more single rooms with en suite facilities.

The Trust offers employees a number of favourable benefits, as well as a commitment to staff training and development through our Clinical Skills Centre and Learning & Organisational Development Department.

We value our nursing staff and offer attractive development packages.
