Help make a difference to children's lives
The ward consists of 20 patient bed spaces. There are four bays and three cubicles. The bays nearest the nursing station are for the high-dependency patients usually just been or going to theatre. The other bays are for patients who are on the path to home. Our cubicles are used for patients with infectious diseases or small babies.
The nursing station is central to the ward for access to all areas.
We are a friendly, enthusiastic team. We believe that the child is of central importance and should be cared for within the context of the family. We encourage family to be involved in the child's care as far as they are able, and keep them fully informed at all times. Staff on the ward are encouraged to keep themselves updated and develop their professional practice from research-based knowledge. They are actively encouraged to participate in the development and future of the ward.
We work as part of a large multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, support workers, specialist nurses, student nurses, medical staff, physiotherapists, play specialists, dieticians, ward clerks, house keepers, pharmacy and the occupational therapist.
We have a playroom located just off the ward, and have two play specialists attached to the ward. We recognise that play is an important part of a child's life and ensure it takes place in hospital. Therefore, if they are unable to go to the playroom, Catherine or Nichola will bring suitable items to the child's bed for them to play with. For older children we have access to the adolescent coordinator who will provide activities either at the bed side or in the hospitals adolescent room.
There is a schoolroom and teachers who work during term time. Any child who is in hospital for more than a couple of days will be seen by the teachers, who attend the ward daily.
On the ward there is a toilet that parents can use, with showering facilities. Just off the ward is a parent's room where they can go to eat, keep their food and have some time away from ward.
We are attached to Hallam University and have nursing students on the ward. These can be first year - final year students and all are encouraged to work as part of the team.
Since the operation her general health is much better then before.
