Help make a difference to children's lives
There are numerous facilities that the ward provides in an attempt to cater for every patient’s individual needs. These are outlined below:
Teaching staff are available during term time from: 08.50 to 12.05 and 12.55 to 15.10. They are happy to support children with work they bring from school, and also provide work if they have none with them. The hospital is an exam centre so if children are missing important exams, then it may be possible for them to sit them, whilst they are in hospital.
This is a sensory room that is designed to accommodate children with learning disabilities. It has different lights and music to provide stimulation for the children whilst being in a relaxing environment that is non-clinical. The room is located on the ward so medical care is on hand if required.
Teenagers often feel uncomfortable when they are on a ward with younger children. To give them space and some privacy the youth room has been created where they can go and watch TV, DVD’s and have access to a computer. This is located on the ward so nursing care can continue but provides them the chance to be out of the bay where other children are.
This is a large room situated on ward M2; it is available for patients from wards M2 and S3. The room is open daily for children of all ages, it provides a large variety of toys and offers art and craft activities. The play leaders are in charge of this room and will put out different activities daily. The team will also visit each child at their bedside to offer games or activities. Children are required to be supervised at all times when in the playroom though. The play leaders will also work with children to provide distraction during a procedure.
Parents have their own room where a fridge is provided for them to keep food and drink. There is a kettle and a hot drinks machine in this room along with chairs, so that time can be taken out from being at their child’s bedside, giving opportunity to get something to eat and drink.
We have separate toilets on the ward for parents and visitors. There are two bathrooms, one that has an electrically controlled bath allowing it to be lowered or raised. This enables all children to be able to bath with any problems and a hoist is available to enable children less able to wash comfortably.
We have a 24 hour visiting allowance on the ward; however, we ask that there are no more than 3 visitors at one time around a bed. This is due to there not being large amounts of space around the beds and it is important that the medical team have access to get to the patients. Children may visit but those under five years of age we advise not to visit to minimise the risk of potential infection. We provide parents beds so that one parent can stay overnight and sleep at their child’s bedside.
