Help make a difference to children's lives
Stacy's story
I started work in the Human Resources Department at Sheffield Children's Hospital in April 1997 as part of the Youth Training Scheme via the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, where I undertook an NVQ Level 2 in Business Studies.
Soon after this I was employed by the department as a HR Clerical Officer a role that I stayed in for nine months. I was then promoted to Recruitment Officer, a role that I thoroughly enjoyed. An opportunity soon arose for a Personnel Officer. I applied for this and was successful and stayed in this role for six years.
I have since had two children, and whilst on maternity leave the role of Human Resources Administrator became available and as it involved Payroll and Recruitment (aspects which I always enjoyed undertaking in my previous role) I applied for the position and was successful. I am currently still in this role.
Liz's story
I started as a temporary member of staff in the Medical Records Department at Sheffield Children's Hospital in August 2006, and loved the team I was working with and the varied nature of the job, compared to other office work I’d done. Luckily I was given a permanent contract with the trust in January 2007 and quickly realised that I would like to build a career within the NHS.
When a vacancy for a secondment to assist the Outpatient Manager arose I decided to apply and was lucky enough to get it. I worked with the manager for 3 months assisting them with the management of outpatient clinics and doing some 18 week pathway validation. I picked up a lot of varied knowledge and confidence which enabled me to successfully apply for the post of Orthopaedic waiting list co-ordinator when the secondment ended in March 2008. The job was certainly a challenge but I really enjoyed it and I got to work with a great group of people and gain valuable experience.
After 18 months a vacancy for Project Support Manager in the Surgical Directorate came up and it seemed like an ideal next step. I have been in the post since October 2009 and so far I’m really enjoying it, and learning a lot.
I hope to carry on progressing within the trust and feel very lucky to work somewhere as special as the Sheffield Children’s.
Jackie's story
I came to Sheffield Children's Hospital in 1996, from the Northern
General Hospital. The Paediatric unit at the NGH closed down and
services were centralised at the SCH. For many this was a difficult
time, but for me I feel it is when my career started.
I became Ward Sister of Ward 2. This was the first ward I had managed. I
did not know any of the staff but remember I was made very welcome. I
soon realised I had a lot to learn. I completed my Diploma in Nursing
and other training courses. Then I applied for the vacant post of Ward
Manager for the Daycare Unit. At that time Daycare was undergoing
construction so I was involved in developing a new team to open the new
unit in 1996.
One of the highlights of my career was an invitation from Mr Mackinnon,
Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, to accompany him to India. I was awarded a
travel scholarship from the Trust and went on a ten day trip to India
culminating in my presentation to the Annual Scientific Conference of
Indian Paediatric Surgeons.
Since then I have presented to the Royal College of Surgeons in London
and the British Association of Day Surgery. All of this with the support
of my managers and Consultant colleagues.
In 2000, I was successful in securing the part-time post of Recruitment
and Retention Senior Nurse. This post was 2 days per week for a year, so
I was still able to manage Daycare. It gave me the opportunity to
expand my knowledge of nurses working within the trust, and how to
retain staff.
In 2003 I undertook my Masters Degree in Advancing Nursing Practice. I
did this at the same time as managing Daycare. I was given lots of
support from learning and development in accessing modules through post
registration learning.
My career has developed with the help of lots of other people within the
trust, mainly consultant staff whom I have worked with, collaboratively
over the last 14 years.
I started working at Sheffield Children's Hospital in September 2008 in the
Human Resources Department. I relocated from Cardiff for this
opportunity so I could progress my career and be closer to my family.
As a city, Sheffield has everything I need. Good transport links,
shopping facilities, and in close proximity to other major cities. The
night life is good, and has a wide variety of restaurants, bars and
entertainment venues including Hallam FM arena, City Hall and the Lyceum
theatre.
