Help make a difference to children's lives
Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service includes both cytogenetic and molecular genetic disciplines. Part of the Diagnostics Directorate at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, it delivers first-class genetic analysis services to the UK and internationally for a wide variety of inherited and acquired genetic disorders.
The laboratory employs over 70 staff and has several ongoing collaborations in research and education with partners in the public and private sector. The Laboratory holds full CPA Accreditation, is a member of the UK Genetic Testing Network (UKGTN) and participates in external quality assessment schemes UK NEQAS and EMQN.
The information provided on our pages is aimed primarily at healthcare professionals. Patients and parents can link to our Clinical Genetics team here.
SDGS is currently organised into five staff groups, three main clinical teams comprising of both molecular and cytogenetic scientists, as well as a Research & Development team and a Laboratory Management group. Please click on a team below to find out more about the work we do. You can also access a full A-Z list of tests that SDGS offers here.
The laboratory should be contacted for advice should there be any doubt concerning any of the procedures; some tests require discussion with the laboratory before a sample is sent, and many services attract a charge.
If there is a test not listed in our A-Z repertoire it could be covered by our consortium partners, to whom samples are forwarded by the Sheffield laboratory. Tests referred to our consortium partner or to other laboratories can be delayed in reporting due to transfer time and factors beyond the control of this laboratory. Please contact us if the sample is urgent.
