What is the Resuscitation service?

The Resuscitation service at Sheffield Children's Hospital is based in the Clinical Skills Centre in the Stephenson Wing on the Main Hospital site. It is headed up by the Trust Resuscitation Training Officer Tanya Ralph. Our main responsibility is to ensure staff are trained to resuscitate the children in our care. In addition the service provides and maintains the necessary equipment to do so. The Trust has an active Resuscitation committee who assist in this work.

Resuscitation training is largely delivered in the purpose built clinical skills centre which opened in 2010. This includes annual updates for all clinical staff as well as national courses such as PLS and PILS. The APLS course is co-ordinated by Trust staff but held off site. 

Simulation

Simulation is a key part of resuscitation training as it enables key team working and leadership skills to be developed in a non-real simulated environment. This is done on resuscitation courses such as PILS and PLS as well as on courses held at Montague Simulation Centre.
Simulation is also used in mock resuscitation events and training courses across the Trust to equip staff to deal with rare emergency events.

Resuscitation equipment

The Trust has standard resuscitation trolleys in all in-patient and most out-patient areas. In low risk areas there are standard resuscitation grab-bags. Critical areas such as PCCU, ED and theatres have additional resuscitation equipment and Lifepak 20 defibrillators. In addition there is a Hospital trolley and defibrillator that is brought to all resuscitation team calls in non-critical care areas.

Resuscitation Training Officer

Based in the Clinical skills centre she has responsibility for the resuscitation service. A large component of the role is planning and delivering resuscitation training.
