Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU)

Welcome to Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU)

In 2010 PCCU underwent a review by a team of psychologists. The aim was to take a fresh and novel look at the way PCCU worked, to identify the good things that we do, and to look at ways that we may improve. 

This unit is divided into two areas Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Care Unit (HDU). There is a separate Neonatal Surgical Unit.

The critical care area underwent refurbishment during 2009 and it was at this time that the two departments merged into one. PCCU is a busy eighteen bedded unit with nine ICU and nine HDU beds. The one team philosophy means that the beds and the staff can be interchanged depanding on demand for either service.

ICU is a regional lead centre that includes medical and surgical emergencies, trauma and neurosurgical specialities. Many specialist treatments are available.

HDU cares for children who require high degree of medical and nursing input, but perhaps less than those on ICU. 

The unit is managed by one multidisciplinary team who are committed to the highest level of excellence and to the provision of family centred care.

We encourage a firm commitment to clinical education and training, ensuring individual programmes and ongoing support. There are strong links in place with the Sheffield Universities to facilitate further education.

Transporting patients between hospitals 

The Embrace Paediatric Transprt Service was officially launched in October 2010. This enables our staff to use their specialist intensive care skills to move patients between hospitals primarily in the Yorkshire & Humber region.
