Help make a difference to children's lives
Oakwood has moved from Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital to the new Becton Centre for Children and Young People at Beighton. We are a sub-regional unit accepting referrals not only from Sheffield but all of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. At times we also accept referrals from across the country.
The unit offers assessment and treatment to young people aged 12-16 years on both an in-patient (13 places) plus 1 non commissioned bed and day patient (12 places) basis. The majority of in-patients stay on the unit for more than five days, but up to four teenagers stay over the seven day period. We accept emergency referrals and admissions on sections of the Mental Health Act 1983.
Admission is for an initial six week period and we hold regular reviews during treatment.
The mix of young people we admit is varied and may at any one time include individuals experiencing difficulties as a result of:
• Psychosis
• OCD
• Anxiety
• Depression
• ADHD
• Eating Disorders
• Behavioral Disturbance
• Self Harming or Suicidal Ideation
• Abuse
• Increasing numbers of those with learning difficulties
Many have a combination of the above. We would not accept referrals for young people who have moderate to severe learning difficulties, or those who would need a secure environment as this kind of service is not available at Oakwood.
