At Sheffield Children's Hospital we have an emergency department or accident and emergency as it is also known.

At what age can I use the emergency department?

Patients aged between 0 and 16 years can use the emergency department facility at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

We're not from Sheffield

Even if you are only visiting Sheffield you can use the emergency department if you feel your child needs to be treated urgently.

What other non-emergency facilities are available for children & young people in Sheffield?

If your child is ill there are a number of options open to you;

• Visit NHS Direct for information about self care and treatments
• Ask a pharmacist for advice - for out of hours pharmacies visit NHS Sheffield's website 'Choose well' website for information about pharmacies, general practice and NHS walk in centres.

What if my child is over 16 years of age?

Unfortunately, we cannot see patients over the age of 16 (after their 16th birthay)  through our emergency department.  In an emergency you should attend the nearest adult accident and emergency department.  In Sheffield that is at the Northern General Hospital.
