Help make a difference to children's lives
Newborn screening tests all babies born in a wide geographic area stretching from Barnsley in the North to Northampton in the South for five important conditions.
This includes more than 370,000 tests each year and identifies more than 100 children with serious but treatable disorders.
Biochemical genetics is the metabolism which helps us all to live and develop, but can sometimes go wrong. This can result from an inherited disorder or may be acquired due to illness in later life.
Inherited metabolic disease is an important cause of childhood illness affecting several hundred children each year. By studying these important pathways and their products we can help combat the effects of these serious conditions.
This section is one part of a network of 17 laboratories in the UK which make up our national service. It serves Yorkshire and East Midlands and for some disorders offers services on a national and international basis.
Acute chemistry whether it is blood sugar measurement or hormone tests, comprises an indispensable part of modern medicine. This section offers a 24 hour, 7 day per week service for the “in patients” and “out patients” that visit Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
The service offered is rapid, reliable and tailored to meet the needs of the children that the hospital seeks to treat.
