Margaret October: Modern Matron

Margaret is one three modern matrons at the hospital whose job involves the day-to-day operational management of the hospital. She and her colleagues spend time on the wards, making sure that standards of care are being maintained and that children and their families are receiving the best quality of care possible.

Team work is essential for the smooth running of the hospital and all roles are important, from junior nurses to cleaners and porters to medical and clerical staff. Together they can make a difference to people’s lives.

Margaret explains: “For me it is great to be part of a close knit team. Working with children, young people and their parents or carers in a care setting is a rewarding and interesting career. You can make a difference to people’s lives.

"It is a privilege to be a member of a healthcare team all working towards to the same goal, to make the patient’s stay in hospital as good as it can be and to facilitate their return to their home environment. I really enjoy my role. Working in the health service can be a challenging and busy career, but I can honestly say that in my 30 year career in nursing I have never once been bored,” she adds.

As a busy teaching hospital nurses can experience paedatric care as part of their training.
